Who Are the Biddies?

The Biddies are  three of the most talented women singer/songwriters in the Midwest.

Kitty Donohoe, Jan Krist and Claudia Schmidt have been individually wowing audiences for years. Now as a trio they have braided together their notable talents as songwriters,  their stunning voices and the wealth of their experiences.

The uninitiated are in for a wicked good time from the Sunday-go-to meetin’-testifying-vocals of Claudia Schmidt to the elegant Celtic lilt of Kitty Donohoe’s voice and the literary lyrics of Jan Krist. The Biddies spin a spellbinding web.  Strong melodies, infectious rhythms, and compelling lyrical stories of hope, disenchantment, courage and love as sung by three women who “have been there, done that, and were too hip for the t-shirt.” You dig?

March is a month set aside to recognize women’s issues and women’s history.

Kitty, Claudia and Jan will be presenting a program of music and storytelling, about women whose lives have inspired and illuminated the world in which we live.

Kitty Donohoe

If hearing the name Kitty Donohoe brings to mind an award-winning songwriter with three critically acclaimed albums to her credit, who successfully merges her Celtic and American roots in her music, you'd be right. (The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Michigan Chapter, Presented Kitty with an Emmy in June 2002 for her 9-11 song "There Are No Words").

And if you think of Kitty as the writer of an enormously popular collection of songs of her native Michigan and Great Lakes region, you would be right once again.

Jan Krist

When (Bob Darden) a music critic for Billboard magazine first heard one of singer-songwriter Jan Krist’s songs, he was driving his car down a Texas back road. Within a minute, he had to pull over to the side of the road—he was that moved by her plangent, poignant song, “Someone.” Those who know Krist’s music are never surprised by that story—they’ve all had the same sort of experience. Krist has all the chops of the great singer-songwriter: expert guitar playing (including amazing open tunings), literate lyrics, and the indescribable ratio between emotion, honesty, and humor that makes for a devoted following.
